I'm getting continuous 'Forum Busy' on the main site.

but why? it never came up with that 'busy' thing even when the virgin vs sky thing deadline was looming

Because that system was broken, something I didn't discover until it failed during that very busy time.

It kicks in when the server load reaches a certain level, allowing the load to reduce again and hence the server survives instead of grinding to a stop.

I guess things became very busy for some reason.
